The Schools Minister and our MP Nick Gibb has been letting local children down for a decade through underfunded schools, and the recent exam grades debacle adds insult to injury. Downgrading students, even down to ‘Ungraded’ in some cases, because of their postcode meant children from deprived areas lost their places at universities, and the government’s U-turn in accepting teachers’ grades came far too late.
The government has failed to protect the interests of students, has ignored warnings and very seriously failed to consult with teaching unions and associations. Gibb himself said that many students would have their grades downgraded – he knew this would happen and failed to take action. He has refused to apologise for a failed system he obstinately continues to describe as “fair” and “robust”. Because he has failed on this, parents and pupils cannot have any confidence as he presides over the return to school in two weeks’ time.
The Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Constituency Labour Party demand that Nick Gibb apologises, and if he continues to refuse this, we must demand his resignation.
