Bognor Regis Labour Party
Active in Our Town
New Planning Proposals will steamroll development without proper local consultation.
The Government proposes to prevent local communities such as Bognor Regis having any effective say in planning new development. A new system of zoning will designate land for growth, renewal or protected area. This could well be a property developers’ charter. They will be able to build with little fear of local objections. There will almost certainly be fewer affordable homes. And local people, who know their communities best, will be denied any proper say once the zones have been set.
Local people know best what is appropriate and what is needed in their area. Without meaningful consultation proper decision-making will suffer.
High property prices are at the root of the housing crisis and these plans will not fix that problem and may well worsen it. Local democracy will be lost.
West Sussex County Council has let us down!
The Conservatives have failed to run the Council properly – and that’s official!
A damning Ofsted Report into Children’s Services led to the Council’s Chief Executive quitting after only being in charge for a couple of years. He said it was an ‘honour and privilege’ to serve West Sussex. It then turned out that the Conservative Administration had paid him a whopping settlement of £265,000. He had already had two months’ paid leave of absence. No reasons were given.
This largesse with our money was handed out at a time of growing shortfall in the budget with economies and cuts in services.
Time and again the West Sussex County Council has failed to curb the ever-increasing salaries of senior staff.
Children’s Services taken over by Trust after ‘appalling failures’
Labour County Councillor Michael Jones warns that 1 October 2021 will be a ‘very dark day in the history of the council’. On that day a Trust, owned by the Council but without a single elected member on its board, takes over the support for our schools.
Following the Ofsted judgement and the Government Appointed Commissioner’s recommendation that a Children’s Trust be established to run Children’s Services, the Council has agreed that Children’s Social Care, Early Help and Education Services will be part of the trust. But no one is held responsible for the ‘appalling failures’ that have led to this takeover.
Fire Response Times Getting Worse
In 2019 an inspection report on our Fire and Rescue service stated ‘requires improvement’. That doesn’t seem to have happened. The latest first fire engine attendance times are the worst since 2015. For first attendance to high-risk areas the target of ten minutes was missed on 20% of calls. Bognor Regis is a high-risk area.
The hard-pressed firefighters have had to cope with a succession of Conservative budget cuts. It isn’t fair on them and it isn’t safe for us.
Action needs to be taken now!
The Climate Change Emergency
We all know that climate change is an ongoing catastrophe.
Labour has been demanding that the West Sussex Pension Fund stops investing in fossil fuels.
The Conservative-controlled council has failed to take action. It has delayed discussing Labour’s call to end fossil fuel investments by the West Sussex Pension Fund.
All County Council policies and decisions, prior to agreement, should be judged on their effect on climate change.
Labour’s Green New Deal will deliver the practical changes that Extinction Rebellion and other environmental groups are lobbying for.
Is the Police & Crime Commissioner a waste of money?
Do you know the name of the Police & Crime Commissioner?
Do you know what the Police & Crime Commissioner actually does?
Do you know the Police & Crime Commissioner’s office costs taxpayers £1.3 million a year to run?
Do you know that there is an election for the Police & Crime Commissioner in 2021?
Surely it would be better to spend the money on more front-line policing.
We support Bognor BID in their efforts to improve our town’s security and make it a more attractive place to shop.
Government U-turn on free school meals
The government was recently forced to U-turn on letting children go hungry over the Christmas holidays as public opinion turned against them.
It would be better to live in a society where no one needs food vouchers to survive, but unfortunately low-paid jobs and zero-hours contracts mean child poverty is increasing and the situation will grow worse still after April 2021, when Universal Credit will be cut by £20 a week.
Local authorities will have to pick up the slack and West Sussex County Council must work with local providers and charities to ensure local families living below the poverty line have food and support.
Labour would campaign for speed measuring devices across Bognor to flash up drivers’ speeds and alert them to speeding. These devices have been proven to reduce speeding and anti-social driving and would make our roads safer, quieter places to live.
